Russian strike flattens Kharkiv apartment block, killing at least 10 including children

At least ten people, among them children, were killed after a Russian strike hit a residential building in Kharkiv on Saturday, Ukrainian authorities said.

Dozens more were reported injured as emergency teams worked at the scene.

Regional governor Oleg Synegubov said the missile struck a five-storey apartment block early in the morning and rescue crews have been clearing rubble in search of survivors. Officials warned there may still be people trapped beneath the debris.

Synegubov named some of the victims, including a 65-year-old woman, a 40-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl, and later reported the discovery of four additional bodies that included a nine-year-old boy.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least ten people were injured, several of them children. The attack damaged seven apartment buildings as well as local power infrastructure and an administrative building, officials said.

Air-raid alerts were sounded across Ukraine, including in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Moscow’s defence ministry said it used drones to strike Ukrainian military facilities, airfields and energy sites, according to the Interfax news agency. Kyiv says the overnight barrage involved 29 missiles and about 480 drones, many aimed at energy and transport targets.

Zelensky called for an international response to what he described as brutal attacks on civilian life and critical infrastructure.

Kyiv says regions hit included Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Chernivtsi and Zhytomyr, where rail links were targeted. Poland’s air force reported scrambling jets to patrol border airspace, a routine precaution during large Russian strikes.

The move was intended to reassure communities in frontier regions.

Elsewhere, Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Ganzha said one person was killed and another wounded in the Nikopol district after roughly 20 attacks overnight using drones, artillery and rockets. A baby was wounded in Zaporizhzhia, and two people were hurt in a drone strike on a house in Chuguiv, north of Kharkiv.

Rescue operations continue amid mounting civilian tolls as the conflict enters its next phase.

International partners and Kyiv officials said they would monitor the damage and consider responses to the latest escalation.
