Human remains have been discovered at a recycling plant in Hartlepool prompting a police murder investigation. The discovery occurred at Tofts Farm Industrial Estate on Saturday with initial testing confirming that the bones are human.
Cleveland Police say that the identity of the person and the circumstances surrounding their placement in the recycling plant remain unknown. A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "At 11.40am on Sunday, March 30, police were called to the recycling plant at Tofts Farm Industrial Estate. The plant is operated by Biffa, a waste management company that serves 95% of the country and deals with commercial recycling, food waste collection, general waste collection and hazardous waste.
"A number of bones had been located by employees working at the plant and a cordon was put in place by police.
"Following examination by specialists, the remains were confirmed as being human and since then a police investigation has been underway."
Detective Inspector Chris Pringle added: “I understand how concerning this will be for those living within our community and the wider public.
"I know there will be families who have missing loved ones and worried about the remains, and I want to reassure you that if any relevant information comes to light, we will be in touch.
“I would encourage anyone who has concerns to please speak to an officer or to call Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 055293.”
A cordon was put in place on Sunday and the plant has remained closed since the discovery was made.
Photographs at the scene show several police vehicles in attendance and a blue, forensic tent erected close to large, industrial bins.
