The A1 has been shut down in both directions since the early hours due to a serious collision and ongoing police investigation. The closure, between J73 (Swalwell) and J75 (Denton), has been in effect since approximately 2am. Northumbria Police are currently at the scene, but there is no estimated time for reopening as of yet. As a result, significant delays are anticipated this morning.
National Highways Traffic officers are on hand to assist with traffic management and diversions have been implemented, reports Chronicle Live.
