British tourists are reportedly snubbing popular European destinations such as Tenerife and Majorca and instead opting for staycation spots in six UK cities. The switch among British tourists is likely to boost the UK tourism industry by £ 4 billion this spring, according to Yahoo News

Recent research by Visit England suggests that 10.6 million people will not opt for an abroad getaway and rather choose a long bank holiday weekend in six holiday hotspots within the British Isles. Destinations London, Brighton, Manchester, Oxford, Edinburgh, and Glasgow topped the rankings, as many made a shift from the Spanish hotspots

Patricia Yates, VisitBritain boss said: “Tourism businesses and destinations will be looking to the critical Easter weekend for much needed cash flow after the lean winter months so it’s encouraging to see many of us are planning a holiday at home.

"From walking in our beautiful countryside with the promise of a pub lunch or on a city break exploring contemporary culture in our buzzing cities to enjoying fish and chips on the beach in our stunning seaside locations, there really is nowhere quite like Britain in springtime."

According to the data, most holidaymakers are thinking of planning a break of one to three nights.

The forecasted boost in domestic tourism among Britons—driven by a preference to vacation at home—is seen as an encouraging sign for the future, especially considering the estimated £97 billion loss the country suffered during the pandemic.

Additionally, British holidaymakers choosing coastal retreats or the traditional countryside might be reacting to overtourism protests in well-known holiday spots such as Majorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Ibiza.

Earlier this year, there were reports that the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands had come together in a united effort to combat the challenges posed by mass tourism.

However, Visit England shared that around 3.4 million of people were unsure about taking a UK holiday, but with temperatures forecast to be sky-high over Easter, it's sure to be a holiday season with plenty of sun.
