Emmy Award-winning art director and set designer E. Jay Krause, who worked with some of the best known names in Hollywood throughout his career has died at the age of 98. The TV legend died on Saturday (April 12) in California. No cause of death has yet been released.
Over his three-decade career, he designed sets for more than 180 productions,. He worked on TV specials for a range of iconic performers such as comedian and movie legend Bob Hope, singer Diana Ross, musicals star Mitzi Gaynor, acclaimed former child star Shirley Temple, silver screen icon Bing Crosby, comedian Jerry Lewis, swimmer turned movie star Esther Williams, funny man Milton Berle, chart toppers The Jacksons, actress Carol Channing and dancer Rudolf Nureyev. He was honoured with two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Art Direction. The first for for Mitzi’s 2nd Special in 1970 and another for his work on Diana! in 1972.
He was also responsible for the sets for 1960s daytime game show The Hollywood Squares which has been is immortalised at NBC Studios as part of their tour.
His famous 1970s-style psychedelic patterns for sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In continue to be hugely influential.
After three decades creating acclaimed sets he branched out in 1983, when he founded Omega Cinema Props, which went on to become one of the industry’s largest independent prop houses.
Alongside his wife, Doris, he sourced rare are and distinctive set dressing from all over the world and the company became one of the industry’s largest independent prop houses, “offering an unlimited selection of residential, institutional and commercial props including furniture, accessories and lighting fixtures of all periods and styles." His collection that still remains integral to film and television productions today.
Prior to entering the TV industry the Los Angeles native served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was one of the 183,000 American troops who took part in the 82-day Battle of Okinawa in which nearly 12,520 American soldiers and sailors died.
Following his discharge he studied design at Pepperdine University before beginning his professional career at NBC in 1951.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carson and Barry Pritchard, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
