Although the all-female crew that took a brief trip into space on Monday April 14 was celebrated as a "historical moment," not everyone was enthusiastic about Blue Origin's mission. Several celebrities expressed their outrage over the spaceflight, which included women such as singer Katy Perry and TV host Gayle King, who experienced an 11-minute journey into space.

Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, who founded Blue Origin, has so far sent 25 people into space and is planning to send up many more paying customers. The latest trip launched at 2.30pm UK time. It passed over the Karman line, an invisible boundary 62 miles above Earth, and landed back at 2.41pm. The short trip came with a hefty price tag, as reports circulated that the passengers, including Katy, had paid at least a six-figure sum for their place onboard the rocket.

The crew which also included television host Tamron Hall, and Lauren Sánchez, who is engaged to Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos. Aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn were serenaded during the flight by Perry who performed a cover of “What a Wonderful World".

Actresses Olivia Wilde, Olivia Munn, and Emily Ratajkowski are just some famous names who have criticised the launch, which marked the first all-female flight crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963.

After facing backlash for the trip, both King and Sánchez defended their journey to space. King fired back: “Anyone who criticises it doesn’t really understand what is happening here.”
